POKOTABI / Kawakami
おいしい隠れ家 か和か美
Hidden along an alleyway off Kuromon-dori and Ayanokoji in Kyoto, Kawakami serves comforting, homestyle classics, from bubbling earthenware pots of nabeyaki udon to spiced curry noodles and fragrant rice bowls.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Stepping deep into a narrow alley between residential buildings off Kuromon-dori and Ayanokoji leads to Kawakami. In a compact interior of about 12 seats, the kitchen turns out udon, soba, and rice bowls with attentive care in an unpretentious, home-style setting.
Among the offerings, the nabeyaki udon has earned a devoted following. Heated to order and served bubbling in an earthenware pot, each bowl delivers the gentle savoriness of dashi that warms from the inside out. With an egg simmered to just the right consistency, shrimp, and tender noodles that soak up the broth, it is an especially welcome dish on a chilly day.
Those seeking a bolder heat can opt for the mildly piquant curry noodles, such as kizami curry with sliced fried tofu or meat curry. The menu also offers pure dashi broths topped with tempura or softly set egg, along with rice bowls served with a side of soup—including oyakodon, katsutojidon, and tanindon—and a daily lunch special, making it easy to choose according to the day's craving.
Operating on weekdays from 11:30 to 16:00, Kawakami accepts payment in cash only. Whether lingering over lunch with a bottle of beer or lingering for a post-meal coffee, it provides a quiet pause away from the bustle of town.
